Maragadha Naanayam 2 Begins Production
Six years on from the original, Maragadha Naanayam 2 has begun production. The sequel to the 2017 fantasy comedy formally launched in Chennai with a pooja ceremony in February, and the team confirmed an August 31, 2026 theatrical release.
ARK Saravan returns to the director's chair. Aadhi Pinisetty leads, paired with Priya Bhavani Shankar. Returning faces from the first film include Nikkii Galrani, Munishkanth and Anandaraj — three of the original ensemble who anchored that film's blend of magical realism and broad comedy. The technical crew has been refreshed: music by Dhibu Ninan Thomas, cinematography by PV Shankar, editing by Thirumalai Rajan R.
The launch event drew a notable Tamil-cinema turnout. Karthi sounded the ceremonial clapboard; Arya and Venkat Prabhu announced the rolling of the camera. The presence of those three names — each from a different corner of the industry — read as endorsement, signalling that the sequel intends to be heard about beyond just the original's fan base.
What's still unknown: whether the team has retained any of the screenwriting voice that made the first film a sleeper hit, or whether they have taken the title in a noticeably different direction. The promise from the launch was simple: bigger scale, expanded cast, more of the magical entertainment that defined the original. The release calendar puts it in late summer 2026, opening just before the early Diwali window.
For Arunraja Kamaraj, the film extends his run of acting roles — he played Nesamani in the 2017 original — and adds another data point to a steady on-screen filmography that runs alongside his directing work.
